Fashion and royal families are inextricably linked. The royal ladies sometimes wear exquisite designs by the most famous designers in the world. In the year 2019 I saw the exhibition Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams at the V&A Museum in London, focussing on Diors relationship with the United Kingdom. One of the highlights was the iconic 21st birthday gown of Princess Margaret from 1951.
From 21 September 2024 to 2 March 2025 a similar exhibition about the French fashion designer Christian Dior (1905-1957) can be seen at the Kunstmuseum in The Hague, The Netherlands: Dior – A New Look, showing his unique, inspirational legacy. His feminine New Look and vision live on in the designs of his successors, including the present creative director, Maria Grazia Chiuri. The wonderful exhibition in The Hague highlights several famous personalities, that are associated with Dior, like Marlene Dietrich and has included designs worn by royals, including Princess Grace of Monaco (Grace Kelly) and Princess Lilian of Belgium. Of course there are also a dress and a few bags from Diana, Princess of Wales, as the bag was renamed Lady Dior as a tribute to her.

A catalogue of the exhibition in Dutch and English and the children’s art book De duizend bloemen van Dior about the young Christian Dior by Annemarie van Haeringen were published to accompany the exhibition.
