While at the Kunstmuseum in The Hague for Dior, don’t forget to have a look at the exhibition Grand Dessert – De geschiedenis van het toetje (Grand Dessert – The history of the dessert) that is on display from 23 November 2024 to 6 April 2025.

Visitors dive into the delicious world of desserts, presented in a very colourful way. The focus of this exhibition is the history and enjoyment of desserts in Europe from 1600 to the present day; from the Dutch vlaflip to baklava or ice cream. Guest curator of this exhibition is the Dutch author and TV personality Janny van der Heijden. She is also part of the jury of Heel Holland Bakt, the Dutch version of The Great British Bake Off. She worked together with the museum curator Suzanne Lambooy.

Hundreds of objects come from the own collection of the Kunstmuseum, Dutch museums, castles and country estates, as well as from a number of private people. Art-historical objects are being combined with creative contemporary contributions. The colourful exhibition includes recipe books, baking tins, dinner services, paintings and many other items. The Royal Collections of the Netherlands have contributed with wonderful tableware and Dutch royal menus.

While after seeing the exhibition all you want is tasting (unknown) desserts, the refreshments in the restaurant of the museum were a disappointment, at least to me. The choice was pretty standard.
