After having been on display at The King’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace, London, from 17 May 2024 to 6 October 2024, the exhibition Royal Portraits: A Century of Photography has moved to The King’s Gallery, Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh. The exhibition can be visited there from 28 February 2025 to 7 September 2025.
Royal portraits have always played a vital role in shaping the perception of the British royal family. The exhibition in Edinburgh displays royal portrait photography from the 1920s to the present day, and shows its evolution. Apart from photos by famous photographers like Cecil Beaton and Annie Leibovitz, proofs and documents from the Royal Collection and the Royal Archives are shown. Furthermore royal photos taken by Antony Armstrong-Jones, Lord Snowdon, can be seen, some taken years before he married Princess Margaret. Interesting are the views on the behind-the-scenes processes, including handwritten annotations by the photographers and correspondence with members of the British royal family and their staff.
