On 14 January 2024 Queen Margrethe II of Denmark handed over the throne to her eldest son, Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark. Since Denmark has a king again, for the first time since 1972. To mark this historical succession, the Amalienborg Museum at the Christian VIII’s Palace in Copenhagen, Denmark, showed a special exhibition from 22 March 2024 to 8 September 2024. “Frederik X: King of Tomorrow” will be on display at the Koldinghus in Kolding, Denmark from 11 October 2024 to 21 April 2025.

The exhibition takes its visitors close to the key events and themes in the life of the new King of Denmark and paints a portrait of him through photographs, objects, video clips, paintings and sound. Objects that are directly related to events and decisions that played a role in shaping The King as a person and as a monarch are on display. Among the items on display are the heavy beam, nicknamed ‘Maren’, that The King Frederik had to dig out from under when he completed his Frogman training, Queen Mary’s wedding gown and King Frederik X’s naval dress uniform, the King’s first schoolbag and his dogsled whip from the Sirius expedition in Greenland.
The King had his apartments at the Christian VIII’s Palace until his wedding in 2004. The couple nowadays reside at the Frederik VIII’s Palace, directly across the Amalienborg square.
